I’m usually not very worried about what I eat. I would rather just enjoy eating what I want, but at the same time I try to eat responsibly. I know I don’t need to eat a 2,000-calorie meal when I go out to eat. I could probably stand to eat less fat and sodium too.

If you’re a serious calorie-counter, then you probably already know most of the the foods you should eat and which you should avoid. But, if you’re like me and only occasionally see nutritional information from restaurant foods, it can be surprising to see how bad certain things are for you. Men’s Health runs a yearly article on the worst foods of the past year, and this year’s just came out. Read: “The 20 Worst Foods in America in 2009.”

A few of the entries really stuck out to me:

    • #13 is a salmon entree from Outback WITH 1,600 CALORIES! The article says thats as many calories as 35 chicken nuggets!
    • #8 was surprising not because I didn’t expect a monstrous burger to have 2,000 calories, but because the alternative is something that I would order (and have) for only 420 calories.
    • #1 – The worst food in America: A shake from Baskin Robbins. Have you eaten this? Would you have tried it if you hadn’t read that article? I might have!

I hope you’re not too discouraged and thinking that you can’t eat anything. There’s still plenty of good food that you can eat with reasonable amounts of calories. You don’t have to only eat the most healthiest item on the menu, just order something a little more healthy than you’d usually get.

And remember, if you make it yourself, then you’ll know exactly whats in it (and what you want to put in it). So, get cooking!
